Tangia of Hello Gorgeous Fitness is in the studio answering questions from the Art of Her audience. This beautiful woman works solely with women just like we do. She has a passion to make the world a better place starting with helping women to feel like badasses in their own skin.

Jess: Hi I’m Jess and I am here with Tangia today. She is a wonderful fitness coach and she has come in to answer some questions for us. So, would you mind telling us a little bit about yourself?
Tangia: Absolutely, my name is Tangia Strata, my business is Hello Gorgeous Fitness and I started my business with the intention and really strong desire to help women get fit, to love their bodies, and most of all to unleash their inner badass.
What should a woman do to feel more comfortable with her body before a photoshoot?
Tangia: I think the best answer I can say is I would advise anyone to move more. To eat better. Those things will naturally make you feel better. You’re not shoving process crap down your throat anymore. All movement is good. I think that some women, in particular, think that it has to be a gym, that it has to be a certain form of working out. It has to be organized. You know we’re in Colorado, the weather is generally beautiful. I tell people all the time, look, go for a walk. Commit to just going for a walk after dinner, or on your lunch with some time but get out, get some vitamin D, get some fresh air. You are going to start to feel better.
How do you help women see themselves as they really are when so many women struggle with body distortion?
Tangia: So it’s a really hard thing, and I think all women struggle with that self-image. Everyone, I don’t care if you’re miss tropic whatever the model things are called.
Jess: Miss Tropic
Tangia: You know models like people, the tall and the skinny ones. You know on some level everybody has that issue. I think there are ways to address it. One thing that I do with my clients that have this issue is that I assign an assignment to them where they need to stand in the mirror naked. We need to stop waging war on our bodies as women and that is what we have been conditioned to do. Over time with the images in media with how we are told that we need to show up to things. We nip and tuck this. You need to look 20 years younger and oh you are in your twenties you need anti-aging cream. It’s a lot of craziness.
Jess: It’s a lot of advertising.
Tangia: It’s a lot of advertising. A lot of products trying to be sold that are based on nitpicking your insecurities. The number one trigger of insecurities for women is their image, their body image. So it is really simple to say well you don’t look young enough, you don’t look thin enough, you are too tall, your shoes aren’t right, this is what your nails need to look like, you need extensions on your eyelashes, or whatever, you need bigger lips, you need a bigger butt, you need a smaller butt. You need bigger boobs, your boobs are too big. We are never going to be enough because there is always going to be a product out there that is trying to change something and get us to buy that product. I think the impact that we have internalized is that we have unconsciously waged war on our bodies. We have just decided that we need to create that image however we need to create it and it isn’t based on anything real. It isn’t based on who am I who do I want to be and how I want to show up in the world? How do I want to operate and feel in my body and create that? It took me a long time to understand that for me personally what I need to feel good. I need to feel strong. I need to be able to have a certain state of readiness in my body. Like if someone challenged me to run up that flight of stairs, I need to feel like, yeah I will take that challenge. I can do that sure. Or like if, I don’t know, some natural disaster happens, and we need to run ten miles that way. I need to know that I can do that and throw a small child over my shoulder and keep running. So now I understand that creating that feeling of strength in my body is what I need to feel like I am my best. So that’s what I do. What I learned is that I had to start to get comfortable with my body, and I don’t really know another way to do that besides actually looking at it. And how often do we actually do that? I think most of us are stepping out of the shower and are walking past the mirror. with the towel around us and not really taking the time to say, “what is it about this body that is making me feel insecure,” and really looking at it. Getting the full-length mirror and standing there. It’s okay to feel like something could be better. I mean, I get cellulite on my butt and I don’t enjoy that. It’s not my favorite, but I also now understand through the exercise of looking at it and just allowing myself to see it as what it is, a body, instead of connecting it to all these other things. Allowing myself to go through that issue, a really painful experience of looking at it and realizing, here I am looking at my body, and pointing out my cellulite, and fat roll here, and whatever is wrong over here, and the world is not spinning off of it’s axis, and I can still go out into the world and everything will still be okay, just giving myself the time to be with me. I think it is a really important exercise that most of us are not doing.
Questions from the audience: Why is it so much harder to lose weight now that I am 30, and why has my ass deflated?
I mean you are hormonally your body changes so much in every stage of your life, I am in my 30s now and I feel the difference as well I have to work harder every year it feels like I have to work harder to maintain and to reach the next goal and that is what it boils down to. Women we are designed to hold onto fat more so than men we have less muscle we also create children, and so your bodies need that so we are designed to hold onto that. I think that part of it is that our lives are becoming more sedentary a little less active. The more things that we have the more we find ourselves sitting behind a computer. and you get shelf butt. If you are in a job where you are sitting all day. it does kinda look like it has deflated, You have to remember with your glutes are a muscle. If you want them to be round you have to develop them. Does it get harder over time? Yeah, it does a little bit. But if you develop that muscle will stay there, which will help you rev your metabolism. Your muscle will help you maintain your metabolism. It will help you to maintain your weight.
Jess: So, for someone that is in their thirties, and maybe this has become a little bit about me, so for someone that is in their thirties sitting in front of their computer editing all day. What do you suggest for them? I am assuming that it will be something like get up and move, but when you have a limited amount of time, what do you suggest?
Tangia: So, I really think that you have to schedule a time to move, and you can do it throughout the day. Everyone has a cell phone you schedule increments throughout the day to get up and take a walk around the building. All movement counts. It doesn’t have to be an hour at the gym, it doesn’t have to be to go run three miles. All movement is good. It all counts.
Questions from the audience: What kind of workout should I do from home when I can’t make it to the gym.
I would say invest in a jump rope. because they cost around 6 bucks, you can get one at any Walmart target or whatever. I do this a lot, especially in the wintertime. I hate the snow. I hate it. There are some days when I am just not going to go to the gym, and I love to be in the gym, but there are some days I am not going to do it. So I have a jump rope, and I have resistance bands and that is all I need to get a good workout. So jump rope pound for pound gives you the biggest bang for your buck. It really does work your entire body. Cardiovascularly as well you can do a lot of things with the jump rope. You can do intervals as fast as you can for 30 seconds and then slow down for 60 seconds. If you do that for ten minutes you are going to be specked, tryst me. So I suggest investing in that and resistance bands. you are talking $10 or $12, and you can throw it in the closet and under the couch. The best thing about them is that they are small and they travel well. So they are always with me when I travel somewhere because I don’t want to say, “well I didn’t have time.” You have ten minutes to jump rope I don’t care who you are, you do. So I would say invest in those. Start incorporating the jump rope and the resistance bands. You can use them for several different muscle groups. I use them around my ankles and do walking lunges to add resistance. I use the stairs at my house a lot. You can do pushups off of your stairs. You can walk up and down them, you can run up and down them. You can lunge on them. You can you can jump. Stairs are very versatile, so use your stairs. I always recommend that people incorporate burpees, again pound for pound it is one of the best workouts that you can do for your body. It works every muscle in your body.
